2007 Fall Color Series Submission Guidelines

Fall Color Submission Guidelines for The Traveler

Thank you for your interest in our fourth annual fall color special series issue of The Traveler.

For the fall color season I publish an initial special issue in September as well as the final October issue. I am accepting submissions for the both issues. At this time, I am only accepting material for the Fall Color, and not for regular issues of The Traveler.

As you might guess, this issue focuses primarily on photography, though I am happy to consider relevant articles as well.

Please submit your digital photos in jpeg format at a 72 dpi resolution if possible. I will re-size, crop, and optimize your photos for the internet here. If you know how to do this, feel free to do so before sending the photos to me, but don’t worry too much if you’re not sure.

If you are scanning from a slide or negative, please make sure that you use a photo scanner, or that your pictures are properly cropped and aligned. I can’t accept photos that are not properly scanned.

What am I looking for? Fall Color! This issue focuses primarily on North American foliage, but I’d be happy to look at great shots of autumn color from anywhere in the world. I’m looking for the “essence” of fall.

It’s best to get an idea of what I mean by that by taking a look at last October’s fall color issue and the fall color photo album (if you’re on a dailup connection, please be patient).

Now comes the part you’ve probably all heard before, in some form: I’m a one man shop. I believe in paying writers and photographers for their talent and hard work, and I do (unlike some other much bigger shops by the way), but I can’t pay as much as I’d like. I will pay $12 upon publication for each accepted photo. If you are submitting an article, my normal payment of $40 is reduced to $12 as well (in addition to any photos you submit) due to the very high expense of producing this particular series of issues. My preferred method of payment is through paypal.com. Alternately, I will send a check.

For this measly sum I am purchasing one-time, non-exclusive rights to your photo and/or article. You are free to submit your work to any other publication as you see fit. Your work is archived and will be available on the website in perpetuity, but can be removed at any time per your request (as might be required from a subsequent publication to which you are submitting).

Please email me your submissions for consideration  by September 10th for the September issue and October 15th for the October issue (a little later for the October issue to give time for photographers to get the latest shots of the season). Attachments are perfectly acceptable.

Finally, please be aware that I will receive many more submissions than I can possibly use for these issues. But if you’ve got that quintessential shot of fall color, I want to see it!

In all cases however, thank you for your interest in helping me create another fall color issue of The Traveler.
