The Ultimate Travel Writer’s Workshop

The Ultimate Travel Writer's Workshop in Denver

Denver, July 23 – 25, 2009

I’ve had the pleasure of being a speaker at several of these travel writing workshops. It’s always a pleasure to work both with the students and with the AWAI staff, most of whom I consider good friends, and some of the most talented writers and teachers of ever met. The most rewarding part is when I see students succeed. This isn’t some “lost weekend” of boring talks that lead nowhere. If you have the desire, this workshop can be the start of a new career.
-Tom Schueneman, editor of The Traveler and TouristTravel.com

Portland Skyline - Something every aspiring travel writer should see!Through my work as a travel writer and here as editor and publisher of The Traveler and TouristTravel.com, I’ve had the good fortune of working with Jen Stevens and Lori Appling from the American Writers & Artists Institute. Jen is the lead instructor and author of the travel writing courses offered by AWAI, and Lori is the director of the travel writing and photography division.

I’ve not only participated as a student in the Ultimate Travel Writer’s Workshops, I’ve also been a guest speaker and group leader, working closely with both Jen and Lori.

But if you’re really interested in exploring the possibilities of becoming a freelance travel writer, then what is really important to know is that many up-and-coming writers have been published in The Traveler – and many have not only published one article but have gone on to become regular and trusted contributors.

I think that’s the highest praise any editor can give a travel writing workshop.

But make no mistake, while Jen, Lori, and the crew provide all you’ll need to get started as a freelance travel writer, come ready to work, have fun, and come home with your first article written and your battle plan ready to start your new career as freelance travel writer.

So are you ready?

If so, now is the time to find out more about the Ultimate Travel Writer’s Workshop in Portland, Oregon. If you reserve you seat by June 20th, you can save $300 off the full tuition price.

Now is the time to live the life of your dreams!

Get Paid to Travel

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

The following message is from my good friend and colleague Jen Stevens, freelance travel writer, editor, and developer of the American Writers & Artists Institute’s popular travel writing program. I’ve been involved with Jen’s work, both as a student and then as a speaker to her workshops. She’s the real deal. If you’re interested in learning more about how you can enjoy the “travel writer’s life”, this message is for you:

Right now, you could be enjoying a week at a tiny hotel on a small Caribbean island, relaxing on a fine stretch of white sand, listening to the palms rustle overhead… for FREE. In fact, you could be getting paid to do it.

If you’ve always dreamed of far-flung travels… on someone else’s dime… then this is your opportunity to make it happen.

On June 12, 2007, I’ll show you how you can get started — and reveal to you real-world strategies to access this lifestyle — for less than $20.

Learn Travel Writing and Photography in Paris

Wednesday, April 18th, 2007

Dear Traveler,

This May in Paris, good friend Lori Appling, Director, AWAI’s Travel Division is running two of their most popular workshop programs together — The Ultimate Travel Writer’s Workshop and The Ultimate Travel Photographer’s Workshop.

The tourists have yet to arrive in May, and so it’s when you discover Paris at its very best. And that’s why she’s scheduled their upcoming workshops there for May 16-19.

A couple years back I attended one of AWAI’s Travel Writer’s Workshops in Paris. It was quite an experience. The workshop was intense, and fast-paced but what I learned really opened my eyes, focused my efforts, and lit a fire of inspiration I needed.

But that’s only half the reason the workshop was worthwhile…

I went because I wanted to know more about the business of travel writing — how to approach editors, write a query letter, what kind of rights I should get when selling an article. And then, of course, there were the perks — the press trip invitations, the hotel upgrades, things like that. I’d be lying if I told you I wasn’t interested in learning more about how I could get a hold of some of those.

Well they’re doing it all again — plus more… this coming May and you’re invited.

For their four-day event, you choose the track you prefer — writing or photography. They’ll hold some class sessions together — writers will learn about how to buy a camera and include photos with their articles… photographers will learn how to write the sorts of travel articles that go best with their photographs and how, specifically, to sell them.
Then each group will break off and work separately — photographers on their photos and writers on their articles.
It’s the ideal event to attend with your spouse or a guest as he or she is invited to participate in either track for a very deep discount.
In the Writing Track You’ll Learn…

  • The #1 easiest and fastest way to get a by-line and a check
  • How to write the kinds of stories editors want to buy
  • The easiest kind of article to sell and resell
  • How and where to find the best freelance assignments
  • How to charm editors into giving your more (and better) assignments
  • Six editing techniques that’ll make any writer look like an expert

Plus…

  • How to buy the digital camera that’s best for you
  • How to include photos with your articles and not only increase your chances of landing a by-line, but earn more, too

In the Photography Track You’ll Learn…

  • The difference between an average snapshot and a $10,000 photograph
  • How to break into online stock agencies and the local fine art market to sell your photos
  • The ins and outs of dealing with models and model releases
  • Pro-level Photoshop® techniques that’ll make any photographer look like an expert
  • How to sell the photos you take on this trip

Plus…

  • How to write stories around your photographs to sell them to magazines and newspapers
  • How to use travel articles to double your success (and your income)

Join Lori and colleagues to find out just how easy it can be as a writer or photographer to explore the world, meet new people, and enjoy the freedom and independence of an income, no matter where in the world you choose to live.
